Heterogeneity in subnational mortality [Schlüter, Masquelier & Camarda 2022]

Archives of Public Health published a research article by Schlüter, Masquelier and Camarda on a differential mortality impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on district level.

Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) and life expectancies at birth were calculated per district for 2020 and compared to the prepandemic situation. SMRs suggest a North-South divide in the relative mortality impact with Mons and Liège experiencing higher mortality than expected; and Brugge and Maaseik experiencing lower mortality than expected. The pattern for the life expectancy at birth is less clear-cut. The results indicate a considerable impact in the Brussels Capital Region with a loss of 2.24 years in the life expectancy at birth in 2020.
