In a working document of the UCLouvain Center for Demographic Research, Bourguignon et al. analysed the spatial and socio-demographic variations in excess mortality observed during the first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Deaths in 2020 and 2021 have been compared to those observed during the reference period 2016-2019. The analyses revealed important variations by age, sex, region of residence, and social group.
