‘Viruses’ published a study by Van Goethem et al. on the risk of a severe COVID-19 infection, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and in-hospital mortality. Analyses are based on the information of 954 COVID-19 patients who were hospitalised during the autumn or winter of 2021-2022. The study design considers potential differences regarding the hospital, as well as the patient’s sociodemographic and socioeconomic background, comorbidities and vaccination status. The results show that the Omicron variant is associated with an increased risk for developing a severe COVID-19 infection and being admitted to the ICU. For in-hospital mortality, no significant differences were found by variant.
