The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on delayed care of cardiovascular diseases in Europe: a systematic review [Khan et al. 2023]

The "European Heart Journal - Quality of Care and Clinical Outcomes" published a systematic review conducted by Khan and colleagues. This review aimed to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on delayed cardiovascular disease (CVD) care across Europe.

The researchers utilized PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to gather data until mid-September 2022, focusing on changes in hospital admissions, mortality rates, treatment delays, and the number of treatment procedures among adult patients. The study synthesized results from 132 observational retrospective studies across various CVD groups, noting significant decreases in hospital admissions for most CVD types and increased mortality rates for ischemic heart diseases and cerebrovascular accidents.

Key findings emphasize the pandemic's disruption of timely medical services, resulting in increased mortality and significant delays in both seeking medical help and receiving treatment. The review suggests implementing clear guidelines and promoting a healthy lifestyle to mitigate such impacts in future health crises.
